Mic workshop & June salon

One of the perks of TCCAN membership is training sessions in all things cabaret. Last weekend we had a new workshop in microphone technology. Jordan Daoust from Bloomington Civic was on hand to tell us everything we needed to know. In brief summary - there are two types of mics out there for us to use as artists; Dynamic (which is basically a reverse speaker) & Condenser (which runs on Phantom Power and creates sound through magnets and 2 tiny metal sheets.) We talked about price range, better qualities and handling of the mic to avoid feedback and showcase our voices best. We also ventured into monitor and speaker components and how venue makes a huge impact on what we do. Full notes will be stored in our Dropbox acct if anyone needs later access.

Our toasty June salon followed where things got so hot we set off the circuit breakers. A large crowd was on hand to see our venerable slate of 10 performers. We had a wide range of tunes and styles from sultry summer standards - to musical theater Tony toasts - to juke box treasures.

Also - shout outs to TCCAN members Rhonda Laurie & Arne Fogel who just had performances around town. Rhonda was bringing some summer sunshine to Three Crows in Delano. "Trade Them For a Pocket Full of Sunshine and Flowers". Accompanied on guitar by Robert Bell. And also, Arne had a gig at the lovely Parma 8200 out in Bloomington with the reliable team of Tanner Taylor & Steve Pikal. Apologies that we didn't get word out to support them both earlier. It is a busy summer for TCCAN and all members!

Windy City calendar

As expected, Chicago has mucho going on in the world of cabaret. They have a large pool of talent, but I am guessing they also have a large audience base. Here are a few highlights coming up.

A Strut Yourself Showcase which features some of their newer members which they call "emerging talent." Noted as a CCP sponsored event June 3rd at Davenport's - just like our salons - it highlights a small pool of singers. In this case Ron Anderson, Arlene Armstrong, Deborah Darr, Lynda Gordon & Serena Pameranz.

Also at Davenports, Louise Cloutier in Loulou's Back in Town, which promises shout outs to Edith Piaf, Ray Charles, Irish tenors and Russian gypsies. Quote... "When Louise sings, you never know what's going to happen." Also in June on the 7th @ 8 PM.

An interesting piece called Ahead of Time by Tracy Adams looks at singers who left us far too early. Karen Carpenter, Marvin Gaye, Patsy Cline, Jim Croce and a slate of others. A daunting task to bring such classics to the stage. June 14th @ 8PM.

And finally, still at Davenport's, what looks like a cabaret consortium by Another Production Company. An open ended concept called Words and Melodies Vol. 1. This initial piece features the prolific Stevie Wonder and brings 6 artists to the stage. June 10th @ 8 PM.

Just in time for summer, Micheal Hutchins brings his solo piece Gelato & Sinatra to Via Cafe for several shows over the season.

And finally, former TC crooner Rob Dorn is sharing the stage with the dynamic Laura Freeman in a charming twist entitled The Judy Garland Duets. Famous pieces with some of her frequent partners; Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire & Mickey Rooney to name a few. This one at the Hoogland Center in Springfield on June 10th for a matinee show at 2 PM.
